HOW TO BUILD UP AND INCREASE YOUR VOCABULARY

Good sentences  are needed in writing a good letter or a good essay. But one can hardly write good sentence if one does not know the right words. Word are therefore the most important tools to a speaker or writer. Vocabulary refer to the extent and knowledge of words. And a limited knowledge of word can lead to writing a very poor essay.
If you want to be a good speaker or a writer of good letter and essay then it is imperative that you should learn to increase or build up your stock of vocabulary.

WAYS YOU CAN INCREASE YOUR VOCABULARY

1. The chief way you can increase your vocabulary is by extensive reading. You should cultivate the habit of reading, - reading almost any printedmatter that comes your way. Yes you should read omnivorously.Read different kinds of books and papers - newspaper, magazines, novels, plays, biographies, history books, books on science, religion, law, medicine and the like. Borrow books from your school Library. You could do much of your leisure reading during your long holidays.

2. As you read, underline with a pencil all the new words you come across.Look up the new words in your dictionary.some student are too lazy even to look up words in their dictionary. They nerely try to guess the meaning of each new word they come across - instead of opening their dictionary  to find out the exact meaning and pronunciation. Never you be like one of such lazy students if you want to increase your vocabulary  Remember to learn as well the correct pronunciaton of each new word you come across.

3, Another way you can increase your vocabulary is by listening carefully and attentively to good speaker of the English language. Attend debates and watch how debatees marshal their points. Take note of the words and fine expressions they use and they use them. Attend court and listen to lawyers speak. Attend public meetings lectures if you are allowed and watch how good speaker command the English language.By watching and learning from them you will eventually increase your vocabulary and become a good speaker or a good writer.

4. Still another way to increase your vocabulary is to be a good friend to your dictionary. This does not mean you should study the words in your dictionary A to Z. However, you can browse through your dictionary occasionally to know the feel of some words, idioms, phrases. As yu browse through your dictionary you may notice that one or two words may strike your attention. And you may so like either their beautiful sound or their pleasant meaning that you wont  mind adding those words to the stock of your vocabulary.

5. Visit the Merriam Webster website to use
an online dictionary and thesaurus. The
site also offers articles about different
words each day to explain origins and
meanings.

6. Finally, be a delierate student of words. Devise some easy ways of learning words and retaining them in your memory. For instance, you could learn to take note of words having similar sound but different meanings. there are know as Homonyms. You can also take note of words which have similar meanings. These are known as Synonyms.  Again, you can learn to take note of words which have opposite meanings. There are known as Antonyms.
